Paul's grandma and her friend spent a wonderful three days with us during a trip to England. Other than showing them around our area (Harrogate, York), RuthAnn wanted to see Hill Top Farm. Since it's only a couple of hours away from us, we made a day of it- and it turned into a wonderful day!
Hill Top is the Cumbria home of Beatrix Potter. After vacationing in the area with her family as a child, Beatrix fell in love with the Lakes District and, after returning as an adult, bought Hill Top Farm. Over the years, she bought hundreds of acres of farmland in the area in order to conserve the region she loved.
The house displays farm life as Beatrix knew it, with furniture and decor she owned. Some of her letters and a small handful of drawings are also on display- particularly the drawings that portray areas of this house!
The gate in front of the house leading to the small kitchen garden.
Maybe Peter Rabbit's been snacking?
The side gate to the kitchen garden.
A few sheep live at the farm- Beatrix was instrumental in maintaining and bettering the Herdwick breed of sheep, a native to the area.
Peter stopped by for a visit!
Across the lane from the farm- the countryside hasn't changed much since Beatrix's day!
The nearby village of Hawkshead has a lovely gallery of her original drawings, displayed in her husband's former law office. It's definitely worth checking out, as is Hawkshead- a picturesque, charming Lakes village!
