0 Budapest: Parliament building

Parliament sits on the Pest banks of the Danube and was built in the Gothic Revival style.   The building was inaugurated during the celebration of Hungary's millennial celebrations of 1896, but wasn't completed until 1904.

We didn't go in, unfortunately, but the exterior of the building was quite impressive!

The flag with the hole cut out represents the Uprising of 1956, a student-led demonstration against the Soviet policies of the current government.  After early signs of success, the uprising was ultimately crushed, but since the fall of the Soviet regime the movement has become a time of Hungarian pride, and, since 1989, October 23 has been a national holiday.
